Happy New Year and Fill in the Blanks for hope

Happy New Year lovelies!

And a sip of Moet for you too.

Don't you love this glass?  No coaster required and so modern!  At $90, I think it could be a great investment.

Of course I have no sense of taste nor energy to even hold a champagne glass so I couldn't partake in any bubbly.  But I live vicariously through you!

So there have been a lot of countdown, best of, and great moments for 2009.

But 2009 also had it's share of bad moments we wouldn't care to remember.  I know I had my doubts about every aspect of my life - personal, academic, and professional.  It's a scary thing to think and wonder whether you really made the right decisions.

I think Gabby said it best when she said she'd still remember the good stuff and carry that with her into the New Year.   Resolutions can be tough to keep but it's nice to have something to strive for.

After all New Year is renewal, rebirth, and hope for better things.  The whole blue moon thing around this time could also signify that it could be a really cool year.  Some folklore states that a full blue moon has a face and talks to those in its light.  Hmmm, weird but interesting.

I was inspired by Anna to really think about the positive and see what your thoughts were for the New Year.

So what do you hope for in the New Year?

What things made you hopeful last year and you wish to bring into the New Year?

I hope for some peace and stability (we may be moving 6000 miles again and I just want an answer!).  My husband and some really cool people in London made me hopeful about meeting and knowing really cool people.  I hope to meet some more really cool people (maybe some bloggers IRL?)  Well see you in Asia, London, or NYC then. ;)

My Taiwan wedding - cake and earthquakes!

So I have a ton of recaps due including of course my wedding dinner (it was an intimate dinner of family and some friends and of course an excuse for me to wear my gown again).  Unfortunately I have few pictures for you because my brother has them all on his camera and who knows when I'll get those.  Oh well.

But I do have a picture of our cakes.   My friend has a lovely bakery in Taiwan and I ordered a large chocolate flourless cake and a tiny raspberry cake in case we didn't have enough.  The large cake actually turned out to be chocolate mousse with a thin layer of cake and raspberry (I guess Taiwanese people aren't as familiar with flourless chocolate cake).  It was still delicious of course.  As you can see the top was decorated with macaroons, chocolates, and fruit all cut into hearts (so my cake toppers just sat at the side of course).  Cheesy and awesome.

Apparently I overestimated because we had quite a bit of cake left over which of course made for a nice breakfast the day after :)

Otherwise, the dinner went fine and I got to see some relatives and friends I haven't seen in a while.  That of course was the main point - bringing together loved ones and feeding them a great meal.  There was some drama which I'll get into later.  But we got to show people our NYC pictures and I loved that Mr. Gadget was so great with my family even though he couldn't understand the language.  He's a very good smiler and nodder.

It was nice.

Then it happened.

At the end when most people had left and I was changing into my street clothes, I felt some movement and heard screaming from the waitresses outside.   I went into the other room where we had the dinner to see how everyone else was.  My aunt and Mr. Gadget were totally fine.  The tremors only lasted a few seconds and it was more the shock of the earthquake than the actual earthquake.

I took Mr. Gadget's hand and we walked out.  Everyone was ok. Talk about a wedding ending with a bang!

p.s. Remember to enter to win some lovely earrings here.

Merry Christmas from Manila!

Hello blogger buddies, it's been WAY too long!  Oh I have so many stories to share but couldn't do it from Taiwan because there was limited internet access where I was staying.  That and Taiwan is unseasonably cold so I developed a nasty cough and headache.  Ugh.

But we flew back to Manila today and I wanted to share with you some holiday cheer Filipino style.  From the decorated churches...

to the malls, Christmas cheer is everywhere.

Ok hoping to catch up on your blogs soon and really hoping Robitussin can truly be my friend.

Blog Award love and some random things that make me happy

So it's been a whirlwind of jetlag induced, super sweet coconut dessert fueled craziness today.
We were randomly stuck in Bahrain for a few hours, came into Manila about 3 am, and slept for an hour.  We met many of Mr. Gadget's relatives today and were only kept going by the preposterous amount of food being funneled our way (because it's hard to fall asleep when you're chewing you know)

But I am way behind on acknowledging love from fellow bloggers and the lovely awards they bestowed upon me so definitely wanted to share the love.

Thanks to the dear Perpetual Party Planner for giving me this lovely award.

It's always sweet to get something sweet. :)

I've also received the Over the Top Blog award from Ms. Westside Wedding and Wife in the City

Finally my first international award from Born to be Mrs. Beever and Wife in the City (err can't get the image for some reason and I'm sharing Mr. Gadget's Macbook this trip).
But it's the "Este blog es muy fofo" award.

They all had slightly differing requirements, but I still offer you 10 random things that make me happy:
1. Bloggers - because as the Happy 101 awards says, I think of you as my sweet friends. :)  It's so fun learning cool DIYs, reading about the trials and tribulations of living in a certain city, and getting a personal peek into someone's personal journey at a particular stage in his/her life.
I think you should all pick and choose among these awards.

But I will highlight a few cool blogger buddies:
Midtown Girl - because she's my NYC girl and her Single in my City series is pretty darn hilarious
Style Obsession - Jessica has the cutest gift guides and always selects great items
Cafe Fashionista - She has the patience and eye to find some of the coolest fashions around
Bon Bon Rose Girls - they always find such cute chic deals!
Perpetual Party Planner - 1 of my newest bridal blogger buddies has such a cool intl. wedding coming up and a very similar vintage chic style (lace dress love!)

2. Mr. Gadget's ability to put up with my silliness.
I like to have little dances for certain things.  I invented a triumphant naggy dance and like to bust it out when my nagging has finally enabled him to do something.

3. Chanel
I don't have you (yet), but totally covet a caviar leather classic handbag...soon my pretty

4. The Sunday UpMarket in London
I have so many pictures to share with you.  I just love markets in London - food, custom jewelery, apparel - yay!

5. Good baguettes
A huge plus to living in Europe - fresh baguettes almost everywhere.  So perfect as a snack!

6. Chips/Crisps - I am a savory snack addict and balsamic vinegar and caramelized onion crisps from Walker's are my kryptonite

7. Skype
I am all over the world.  Literally.  Thank goodness for free chats and calls to loves ones.

8. Chicken soup
So perfect on a dreary night or any time you need a pick me up.

9. Shiny crystal wonders
I got a few crystal diamante lovelies during the Jimmy Choo for H&M madness and just got some awesome candleholders with cute crystal flowers around.  Sigh, pictures soon!

10. Little rays of hope
Because life isn't always perfect, but there is always hope and it may be "the best of things, and good things never die".

Chic 'n Cheap Living Contest - Win aquamarine and moonstone earrings from Little Bit of Pretty

Etsy is truly an emporium of beautiful, curious, and unique things (and you deserve a little gift for you or a loved one).   I'm so happy I discovered this handmade marketplace as well as a few artisans behind some great shops on Etsy.

One new Etsy friend is Kimberley of Little Bit of Pretty.
Her pieces have a natural, organic style reflected in her use of semi precious gemstones, swarovski crystals and pearls, freshwater pearls, sterling silver and gold fill.  These often have a final whimsical touch as seen in the adorable Keri - holiday edition (inspired by a necklace first worn by Keri Russell) and priced at only $35.

Kimberley first started making jewellery as a hobby while in university because she couldn't afford it. She was at a corporate job for a year and then realized that she wanted to work on something that made her happy.

These delicate pearl hoops at $20 make me happy - they can be worn everyday or for a special occasion (right bridal buddies)?

She is inspired by images from everywhere - magazines, tv, movies - combining a nice design with her favorite materials.

Her ideal customer sounds like me and you!  Kimberley says "Someone who is fashion conscious, probably career oriented (but not necessarily so), someone with a busy schedule who likes to look pulled together all the time but doesn't have the time to plan outfits and accessories ahead of time. Therefore my collection must be versatile - everything must go together and look good, and be able to be worn by itself as well."

One of my favorite pieces are these Botswana Agate pendulum earrings - versatile and pretty, it pairs well with earthy tones and is a steal at $20.

Cake topper options and do you need them?

The range of possibilities for cake toppers is pretty darn astounding these days but also pretty awesome.  The level of customization is as high as you're willing to pay.  Even the NY Times has written about the possibilities today.  It definitely got me thinking since I never did one for my ice cream cake for the NY reception,  but was intrigued for the Taiwan reception.

You can get simple shapes like these that can still show the details of your dress or your husband's goatee and glasses from Fancie Fannie's Etsy shop (at $20 too which is pretty great).

Or adorable clay ones likes these from AV Artwork that can show tons of details (and even additional loved ones like the black puppy below, price TBD).

Or fall for these super cute handmade chicks if you're willing to pay $130.  They are really adorable of course.

But do you need cake toppers?

Like any other discretionary item, it's up to you.  On the one hand, it's a lovely memento from the wedding and could be in your family for years.  It would be a lovely registry item and how cute if a friend or loved one got it for you.  On the other hand, hmm, do you really need it or could you have put that money toward something else?

I was inspired by my blogger buddy Honey my Heart and her Hello Kitty cake toppers.

She is that cool.

I think she said she got them at Urban Outfitters and they were salt and pepper shakers.  How cool and totally reusable at home!

So I present our cake toppers we'll have on our cake in Taiwan.  I didn't really set out to buy cake toppers but I loved the practicality of being able to actually use them (after all our studio doesn't have a lot of room for non-essentials).  I might put a little veil on one if I have time.

What do you think?  Are you a cake topper person?

My custom couture garter from Florrie Mitton

So I have been working with the wonderful, patient, and extremely sweet Claire at Florrie Mitton Couture the last few days to design my custom garter.  I wasn't sure what I wanted but I did want something that was more of a combination of her current garters.  She was great and communicative and showed me pictures of all the possibilities (trims, charms, different fabrics).  It was really great she was in the UK so I was able to get the garter today (day that I'm leaving!)

Big thanks again to my dear friend Louise for partnering with Claire and allowing me to win this garter!

Thank you Claire for being so patient and kind!  I love the garter and wholeheartedly recommend her!
Here are some pictures of the package and garter.

And I'm off...will be slow in commenting but will be still be around (on the other side of the world).
xoxo!

Even the box is wrapped nicely!

Front of garter - ivory silk tulle with pearl and crystal charm (sorry for side view)

Back of garter (silk and lace bows)

Yay!

Hope a la Shawshank Redemption

"Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."

An innocent man is imprisoned for almost 20 years.  His life is completely stripped from him and circumstances beyond his control.  He could have easily succumbed to the darkness but did eventually take control and create the life he deserved.  Life isn't always as we intended it to be.  This is easily one of my favorite movies ever because of the message of hope.

Stuff happens, some that we can control, some that we can't control.  It can be heartbreaking to be taught by your mother and your environment that you will receive good things because you work hard, you are a good person, etc. and things just don't happen the way they could or should.

We may all have encountered difficulties, no matter how large or small.  But as hard as it is, we must do what we can to get through it with the support of our friends and family and our own belief in the outcome.

I have recently discovered Summer.  Her sweetness and caring really come through on her blog. She has had a particularly tough time.  So I offer my thoughts, prayers, good vibes, and hope to her and all others who need it.  It's the end of the year, but we are also beginning a new one.  So let us renew hope.

... because "no good thing ever dies".

Portable love also helps too a la Coach (and who doesn't love stylish portable love?)

FFF - Free songs from Amazon, Brooklyn Flea Christmas Market, Inherit the Wind with Kevin Spacey in London

Woohooo - another Fun Free Friday ladies and gents!  Not a minute too soon of course. It's time to sit back and RELAX (and stay inside with some warm cider if you're somewhere cold)!

Everywhere
I love me some free stuff and Amazon doesn't disappoint with a random assortment of free holiday song downloads (different one per day).   Go here to download - sigh US only though.

NYC
Tis the season for us to give big, fat bonuses to department stores (to be fair retail therapy does cure quite a few ailments)!  My dearest Midtown Girl posted an option if you want to rebel a little and browse some handmade gift ideas at the Brooklyn Flea market in Manhattan.  They have food options too - cupcakes for everyone!

London
Dear Santa, it's been a hard year.  Moving across the world, going through a frustrating job search, not knowing where I'll be next year...I'd love to witness the acting talents of Kevin Spacey (starring in Inherit the Wind) so I can at least appreciate London a bit more, forget my silly troubles, and see the show before it ends.  Please tell me there are still tickets available for this weekend so I can witness the awesomeness of Kaiser Soze onstage.  I'll be nice and make sure Mr. Gadget is too.

xoxo,

Have a fabulous weekend!  What will you be doing?

Dealing with anxiety and appreciating the cutest thing ever

We're leaving in three days which means there will be a whirlwind of cleaning and packing in the next few days.

I realize I have a million things to do including:
  • order cakes (luckily my friend has a bakery and I've already warned her I'd place an order)
  • finish favor envelopes (tedious but pretty easy)
  • e-mail friends restaurant location
  • finally decide on the garter (something wasn't exactly turning out as expected and now it will be shipped to me day I leave!)
  • Design some slideshow and source equipment (cousin couldn't lend me a projector as expected)
  • attempt to print wallet size pictures
I'm getting a little anxious because I have a week to go and 3 days left in London to finish all this up.  I'm worried and almost don't want to do all this extra stuff.

Mom e-mails me and reminds me:
make it very nice and special.
Mom

Even though I'm tired I should do something (maybe I won't get to everything on the list) because it is the first time Mr. Gadget is meeting the extended family.  My family is special and I should do what I can.  It's hard though trying to figure this out in another country.

Martha Stewart has left me stranded in London.  I just can't find any craft stores around central London though Anna was kind enough to give suggestions.   So no fancy cardstock, craft punches or ribbons (seriously I had 27 rolls of grosgrain in NYC which my dad couldn't find, argh).

But it's cool.  I'm making do with what I can find and as I learned the first time:
you can't control everything, things will go wrong, but you run with it and it will still turn out great.

I don't like to vent too much here, but at least hope that last bit of advice is useful.

So I'm ready for bed, not thinking wedding and leaving you with these thoughts.

Aaww cutest dog ever.

and of course cutest kitten ever.

Life is too short to stress, think cute and furry thoughts.
Oh and when I told Mr. Gadget I was looking for images of "cutest thing ever" he said "Where is the picture of me?"  Oh yes I married a comedian.

What I'd wear...when I'm traveling

My dear blogger buddy The Professional Bridesmaid asked for "What I'd wear" while traveling (this Toronto lady has half her closet in LA so she's no stranger to cross-continent flights!).  Of course now is the perfect time.  In the next month, a lot of us will be traveling.  Whether you're visiting loved ones, taking a break, or just escaping in general, you will likely be taking a long car or plane trip to get there.  Boo to the travel and yay to the destination.

When I think about comfortable, minimally wrinkling travel outfits, I immediately thought of clothing with great materials (supima, great cottons, and other soft materials).  I ordered a few Michael Stars dresses a while ago and love the materials and reasonable prices - naturally he was the first brand that came to mind for travel outfits.

Option 1
Sometimes you just want one piece so for those that prefer a dress, how about this comfy Michael Stars supima 3/4 length dress? At only $72 - it's a pretty good deal and more importantly is made of great material.

Option 2
If it's a long flight or you get cold easily, then it's time for a top and jeans.  This top for $74 is pretty comfortable and a little sexy as well.

Of course some comfy jeans - on sale for $98 if you're small (and Revolve gives 30% off to new customers with certain exclusions, they totally rock)!  J brand wide leg in a dark wash.

With either option, definitely have a warm cardigan.  I love this versatile wrap cardigan.  At $198, I think it's worth the price but of course wait for a sale if you can (and Michael Stars has good sales).

Not able to sleep on flights?  Be like a movie star and throw on some shades like some classic aviators for $139.

Then one of my favorite accessories for both style and "I don't have a bad hair day purposes" - this cute hat, a deal at £12.00.

.

Finally you'd definitely need a pair of shoes you can slip on and off easily (sigh, until they really roll out the machines that will let you go through without taking off your shoes).

My friend told me about OTBT and how comfortable their shoes and boots were.  These Mary Janes were made for traveling and aren't bad for everyday shoes too (like many other NYC women I commuted in comfortable shoes and had my shoe collection at my desk; great price too at ).  Sorry for the small picture!

If I wanted a heel, I'd get a stacked heel so would that the shoes would actually be pretty comfortable.

Finally I got this bag, the Hayden Harnett Ibiza, from my best friend before leaving for Singapore and France last year.  I love the durability, size and versatility (it can be folded in half).  It can hold a lot too and I wasn't as afraid when setting this down on planes since it could be easily cleaned.  It's a good price at $198 and can go on sale as well.

What else is part of your travel wardrobe?

Photo Love: Tropical daydreams...Manila and a flora sanctuary at home

Baby it's cold outside.  Oh yes and rainy too here in Londontown.  Yep, it's the oh-rather-stay-in-turn-up-the heat-and-drink-soup kinda weather.

That's why I'm ECSTATIC to be escaping to two warm countries.  I think Manila will be particularly fun because it will be my first time there.  I can't wait to bask in the sun, explore the sites, and have lots of icy treats (Mr. Gadget tells me halo-halo is yummm).  Of course there's the excitement of meeting a few of Mr. Gadget's relatives for the first time.  Like me because I bring you English chocolates!!!

Umm, how fun and neon colored is that dessert?  Image from here.

Note: Lovely readers, would really appreciate if you had any recommendations for local designers and must-see places in Manila or Cebu (or Taipei for that matter since I'm not super familiar with it).
Thanks!

Dear Monica of Ciao Chessa posted about having a favorite place or image that you can turn to for a mental escape.  I think this may be my new image.

Image from here.

We all have rough patches in our lives and it's great to think of good time or places that truly makes us serene or brings us to a time and place of pure contentment.

I love the concept of creating a space for yourself at home.  I saw this image and was instantly captivated (I'd have couches or day beds in there though).  Oh if I had the room and energy to maintain an indoor flora sanctuary, it would be so amazing.  I'm um not so good with maintaining plants myself so I'd have to discipline myself.  But man, I love the indoor jungle feel of it.

Where do you relax at home or what is your favorite place to relax in general?

Taking a breath...final stretch before the Taiwan wedding and my couture garter!

Isn't it scary how much you can vow not to be like your mom and then end up exactly like her?  My mom can be a nervous stress ball taking on too much but still wanting to accomplish a million things.  So me!

My project this week - those cookie favors for my relatives for my Taiwanese wedding dinner.

Conversation with mom:
Mom: Are you doing something special for the guests?  Favors aren't expected, but you should do something.
Me: I'm going to give them chocolate chip cookies mom.
Mom: Nooooooo.  Chinese people don't eat cookies.  Get them something English.
Me: Like what?
Mom: Something London.  Something else.
Me: But these are English butter cookies with chocolate chunks - very English and American.  I'll put them in little bags.
Mom: Fine.  But wrap them with lace or make them nice.  Chinese people don't care.  But they should be nice.

Sigh.

But I will listen because I'm not really sure what I should and shouldn't do with my relatives in Taiwan.  I should be culturally aware while still trying to retain my own vision.  There is sometimes a more showy aspect in Taiwanese weddings which I'm not entirely comfortable with (ugh an entirely separate conversation around creating a slideshow).

Anyhoo, in other news, I won my lady Thirty Something Bride's custom couture garter contest!  Woot!  Well Mr. Gadget is certainly excited.  Sigh, I feel like I just got the Hermes Birkin of garters, I am so lucky.  I'm working with sweet Claire at Florrie Mitton couture to create a garter that's a hybrid of these and she'll be expressing it this week.

I'm loving it for pictures and the vintage chic vibe (ME!).  What do you think?

London Oxford Street, bizarre Selfridge's windows, and why Italian friends who can cook rock

Hello lovelies, another weekend over, another week starting up.

I have a pretty awesome weekend because I finished buying gifts for my family in Taiwan, FINALLY figured out how to package all these cookie favors (err just gotta test it out, stat and hope I can give you a semi-useful DIY), and had a lovely belated birthday dinner with some friends in London.

So I spent Saturday afternoon walking along Oxford Street (1 of the main shopping streets here).  The street was closed to car traffic and there were already 2 million people riding the underground so I was forced to walk an extra mile to catch a bus.  Yeah.

Oxford Street was insanely packed with shoppers.
This lighting display was SO London - yep it was rainy as usual.

But it was nice to see some of the department stores totally lit up.

Saw a elf on stilts.  Yep, totally normal.

Then of course the strangeness of the Selfridge's window displays.  I really don't travel around Europe catching weird window displays - it just happens.

First, somewhat normal display (and there were cute handbags in the sleigh)

Then the funkiness starts.  "Who's a Pretty boy then?"  Yes it's a cat with a feather boa and an enviable collection of shoes.

Puss in Boots and champagne.  Obviously.
Finally half-cow, half-milk maiden, all champagne.  Huh?

My friend said that there's a form of marketing that's geared towards creating shocking reactions from people.  In that way, they're very memorable and people talk about it because it's weird.  I believe the Selfridge's display definitely qualifies for this area of marketing.

But I am glad that I got to see some friends for a nice dinner later that night.  The restaurant was insanely popular and didn't take reservations.  I think they create an appetite for their food but making you wait so long.  But the food was pretty good.  Best part - my lovely Italian friend made tiramisu!  I don't always love tiramisu because I think there should be a good marscapone cheese to ladyfinger ratio and some places are just darn stingy.  I requested my friend's tiramisu for my birthday and he didn't disappoint (with help from another friend visiting from out of town)

Mmm, tasted amazing (looks kinda liquidy here) and everyone at the table agreed .   Wish I could have shared some with you too!

How were your weekends?
